Tech Page: 5G Technology
The 21st century is the most technologically advanced century so far. With the rise in cell phone technology arises the need for higher quality cell phone services, and so arose 5G technology to support the larger network.
5G technology uses a higher frequency range than 4G, to produce higher network speeds. However, this brings up a problem, higher frequencies mean shorter range. To counter this, engineers came up with a solution, which was to have three different 5G speeds, depending on the range. Low-band 5G towers are barely more powerful than 4G, at 400 MHz, but with a minimal range decrease. Mid-band 5G towers use 2.5 GHz Microwaves to send data much faster than current 4G towers, but only have a range of a few miles in either direction. Finally, High-band 5G towers have a frequency of 25 GHz, but have minimal range, having trouble passing through certain walls, or windows. This weak signal is worth it, however, as it offers download speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, which rivals, and is often superior to mid-range WI-FI speeds.
5G technology is an ambitious system which, if implemented correctly, would universally make the world a better, more comfortable place to live in. While technology such as this might not save lives, it allows for greater communication, and communication brings along many beneficial things to society that would save lives.
